Alongside his public writing and professional practice, Jarell has contributed to policy conversations about racism in mental healthcare, intersectional inequality and culturally responsive support. This work includes constituency correspondence with parliamentarians and considered proposals for institutional change.
Following Jarell's representations about racism and cultural responsiveness in mental health services, his constituency MP, Emily Thornberry, confirmed that she had referred his concerns to the Secretary of State for Health. Her office subsequently forwarded a response from the Department of Health and Social Care in July 2023.
Further correspondence addressed the need for culturally responsive professional training, an intersectional approach to mental health policy, equitable access and meaningful organisational accountability.
